World Space Week was officially established in 1999 by the United Nations General Assembly. It was chosen to coincide with two key dates in space exploration history: October 4th, the launch date of the first human-made satellite, Sputnik 1, by the Soviet Union in 1957, and October 10th, the signing of the Outer Space Treaty in 1967, which laid the groundwork for international cooperation in space exploration and the peaceful use of outer space.
