Grok is a generative AI chatbot developed by xAI, a company founded by Elon Musk. xAI announced that it had made Grok open source, fulfilling a promise made by Musk a week ago. The decision to open source Grok came after Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, another prominent AI company, accusing them of deviating from their founding values of transparency and sharing technology for the betterment of humanity.

Development

Grok was developed by xAI as a large language model trained from scratch. The base model, known as Grok-1, is a 314 billion parameter Mixture-of-Experts model. The pre-training phase of Grok-1 concluded in October 2023, and the model was not fine-tuned for any specific application, such as dialogue.

Open Sourcing

xAI released the base model weights and network architecture of Grok-1, making it available to the public. The company shared a GitHub link to allow others to access and use the model. By open sourcing Grok, xAI aims to promote transparency and collaboration in the field of artificial intelligence, enabling researchers, developers, and organizations to explore and build upon the capabilities of this large language model.

Lawsuit Against OpenAI

Prior to making Grok open source, Elon Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, the creators of the popular ChatGPT chatbot. Musk accused OpenAI of deviating from its founding values of transparency and sharing technology for the betterment of humanity. OpenAI responded to the allegations, labeling them as “incoherent” and pointing out that its basic chatbot is free and widely used by millions worldwide.

Elon Musk has been a vocal critic of OpenAI, claiming that the company does not transparently share its technology for the benefit of humanity. Important Facts 

Grok is named after a term coined by Robert A. Heinlein in his 1961 science fiction novel “Stranger in a Strange Land.” In the novel, “grok” means to understand something deeply and intuitively, to the point of becoming one with it.
Elon Musk, the founder of xAI, is also the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, and has been a prominent figure in the tech industry for his ambitious projects and controversial statements.
