The United Nations designated 21 June as the International Day of Yoga by resolution 69/131 on 11 December 2014 to recognize yoga’s widespread appeal. The aim of Yoga is to join or to unite, it symbolizes the union of body and consciousness.

Why Do We Celebrate International Yoga Day 2023?

Prime Minister took an initiative to propose the International Day of Yoga on September 27, 2014, during his speech to the UN General Assembly. According to PM Modi, yoga is a gift of India that may improve people’s health and happiness worldwide. On December 11, 2014, 193 of the UN’s member countries decided to observe June 21 as the International Day of Yoga. The commemoration of the first day occurred on June 21, 2015.

International Yoga Day Program 2023

To promote widespread participation in the 9th International Day of Yoga (IDY-2023), the Ministry of Ayush has launched several flagship projects. One of the efforts is the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga’s 100 Days, 100 Cities, and 100 Organisations campaign. This initiative, which runs from March 13 to June 21 and emphasizes enhancing people’s health and well-being, aims to spread yoga knowledge among individuals all around the country.

The Indian Army, Indian Air Force, Indian Coast Guard, and Border Road Organisation organize yoga demonstrations along the borders, coasts, and islands as part of the ‘Yog Bharatmala’ project. This project focuses on the uniting power of yoga in various geographical settings, enhancing the well-being of residents and communities.

Yoga demonstrations will be held in the Health and Wellness Centres that the Health and Ayush Ministries have created and several Amrit Sarovar. The entire “Har Aangan Yog” experience this year will reflect this holistic practice’s true meaning and spirit.

One of the top ten global causes of mortality and a major risk factor for non-communicable illnesses, including diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. But yoga is more than just a workout. According to the late B. K. S. Iyengar, one of yoga’s most well-known practitioners, yoga cultivates the skills needed to carry out one’s activities with skill and endows one to maintain a balanced attitude in daily life.
