India’s First Gati Shakti Research Chair

 

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW) has collaborated with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Shillong to establish the first ‘Gati Shakti Research Chair’ in India. This initiative aims to enhance academic research in multimodal logistics, particularly focusing on the North-East region.

India’s first Gati Shakti Research Chair to be established at Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Shillong. An MoU was signed between ministry of ports, shipping and waterways (MoPSW) and the IIM on Friday for the Chair which will spearhead high-quality academic research on multimodal logistics with a North-East focus: building knowledge on multimodal logistics development strategies and practice in the North-Eastern region (NER), facilitate knowledge and innovation for logistical capacity building in the region.

The chair also aims to foster collaboration with global experts in creating and developing knowledge and expertise while strengthening the links between the multimodal logistics research and capacity-building activities with key stakeholders such as the logistics industry, government bodies, local authorities, and other partners and associations.

Union minister of ports, shipping and waterways, Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal said: “With the establishment of this chair at your prestigious institute, the Northeast is poised to take lead in the research & development of multimodal logistics activities, capacity building and outputs. Students fraternity will now have an opportunity to hone their skills and build their careers in the field of logistics.”

A strategic round table was also organised to discuss the multimodal logistics development strategy for connecting the NER to the wider national and international regions to strengthen the local economy at the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Centre for Policy Research and Analysis at the IIM. The meet attempted at strategising for the development of a collective NER logistics Policy in line with the National Logistic Mission as well as steps for the operationalisation and implementation of the policies related to multimodal logistics in the NER.

 

Objectives of the Chair

    1. Research Focus:      Conduct high-quality academic research on multimodal logistics, emphasizing development strategies and practices in the North-East.
    2. Capacity Building:     Facilitate knowledge and innovation to bolster logistical capacity in the region.
    3. Global Collaboration:  Foster partnerships with global experts to develop expertise and knowledge exchange.

Significance and Impact

  1. Regional Development: Enhance logistical capabilities in the North-East, aligning with the PM Gati Shakti Masterplan.
  2. Career Opportunities: Provide students with avenues to excel in logistics-related fields through skill development and career opportunities.

Strategic Round Table Discussion

    1. Objective:     Develop a comprehensive strategy for connecting the North-Eastern Region to national and international logistics networks.
    2. Policy Formulation:    Formulate a collective logistics policy for the North-East in line with the National Logistic Mission.

Institutional Support and Collaboration

    1. Research and Innovation:       Foster a culture of research and innovation to support the region’s development.
    2. Guidance and Collaboration:      The Ministry will actively guide research agendas, prioritize research areas, and facilitate collaboration among stakeholders.
