The “Stay Safe Online” campaign and the “G20 Digital Innovation Alliance” (G20 DIA) were launched recently as part of India’s G20 presidency.

During India’s presidency of G20, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is running a campaign titled ‘Stay Safe Online’ aimed at creating awareness among citizens including specially-abled persons to stay safe in an online world on the widespread use of social media platforms and rapid adoption

 

                                                                                 About the Campaign

India has taken over the Presidency of the G20 for one year from 01 December 2022 to 30 November 2023. The G20, or Group of Twenty, is an intergovernmental forum of the world’s major developed and developing economies. It comprises of 19 countries (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, UK, USA) and the European Union (EU). Collectively, the G20 accounts for 85% of global GDP, 75% of international trade and two-thirds of the world population, making it the premier forum for international economic cooperation.

During India’s presidency of G20, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is running a campaign titled ‘Stay Safe Online’ aimed at creating awareness among citizens including specially-abled persons to stay safe in an online world on the widespread use of social media platforms and rapid adoption of digital payments. As India is making significant efforts towards becoming a trillion-dollar digital economy, the campaign focuses on sensitizing users of all ages about online risk & safety measures and promoting cyber hygiene thereby reinforcing the cyber safety of citizens.

Citizens of all age groups, covering rural and urban areas, with special emphasis on children, students, women, teachers, faculty, senior citizens, specially-abled persons, officials of Central & State Governments etc. are invited to participate in the Stay Safe Online campaign.

 

What is the “Stay Safe Online” campaign?

  • The “Stay Safe Online” campaign” aims to raise awareness about the importance of staying safe in the online world amid the increasing dependence on the internet.
  • Unique challenges are arising with the rapid evolution of the technology landscape and the increasing number of internet users in India.
  • The Stay Safe Online Campaign seeks to make citizens aware about the various cyber risks and ways to address them.
  • The year-long campaign will especially target children, women, students and senior citizens, differently-abled people, teachers, and government officials.
  • It will be conducted in Hindi, English and regional languages to cover a larger number of people.
  • It will deliver awareness content in the form of infographics, short videos, cartoon stories, etc., via widely used social media platforms and other forms of media like print.
  • Key stakeholders like government agencies, NGOs, civil societies and others will be involved to expand the reach of the campaign.

 

What is G20 Digital Innovation Alliance (G20-DIA)?

  • The G20 Digital Innovation Alliance (G20-DIA) aims to identify, recognize and promote the adoption of innovative and impactful digital technologies developed by the starups from the G20 countries and the non-member states that were invited.
  • These technologies must be capable of addressing the needs of humanity in 6 broad themes – agriculture, health, education, finance, secured digital infrastructure and circular economy.
  • The technologies developed based on these themes will be enabled via the Digital Public Goods Infrastructure so that they can be adopted at the global level, the digital divide is removed and sustainable and inclusive development is ensured.
  • At the sidelines of the Digital Economy Working Group (DEWG) meeting in Bengaluru, the G20 Digital Innovation Alliance (G20–DIA) summit will be organized. During this event, top nominated startups from each theme will showcase their solutions to the global community of investors, mentors, corporates and other stakeholders.

 

What are the Activities to be Covered under G20- Stay Safe Online Campaign?

The resources under the G20-Stay Safe Online Campaign will cover themes such as tackling online frauds, reporting harmful content, tips to Stay Safe Online, and organizing National level competitions to inculcate cyber hygiene practices among internet users as part of the Campaign & can participate  in the various activities.
