Indian Institute of Skills

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) in Mumbai. This institute is designed to train people for the future, focusing on skills that will be important for Industry 4.0—the new era of smart factories and advanced technologies.

Objectives of the IIS

The IIS aims to prepare workers with modern skills needed for various industries, including:

• Factory Automation (using machines and technology in manufacturing)
• Digital Manufacturing (using digital tools to produce goods)
• Mechatronics (combining electronics and mechanical systems)
• Artificial Intelligence (AI) (machines that can learn and make decisions)
• Data Analytics (analyzing data to make better decisions)
• Additive Manufacturing (using 3D printing to create objects)

Public-Private Partnership Model

The IIS was created through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), meaning it’s a collaboration between the Government of India and Tata Trusts, a large charitable organization. This partnership helps bring together government support and industry expertise to create high-quality training programs.

Specialised Courses

The institute will initially offer six specialised courses to train students in advanced technical skills. These courses include:

• Advanced Industrial Automation & Robotics (learning how to use robots in factories)
• Industrial Automation Fundamentals (basic knowledge of automated systems)
• Advanced ARC Welding Techniques (special welding methods used in industries)
• Additive Manufacturing (using 3D printing technology)
• Electric Vehicle Battery Specialist (working with electric vehicle batteries)
• 2 & 3 Wheeler EV Technician (servicing electric motorcycles and scooters)

Facilities and Practical Training

To provide hands-on experience, the IIS will have advanced laboratories developed in partnership with more than 15 global and Indian OEMs (original equipment manufacturers). This ensures that students get to work with real industry equipment, making their training more practical and relevant to what companies need.

Industry Relevance

Graduates from the IIS will be ready for jobs in fast-growing fields, such as:

• Electric Vehicle (EV) Manufacturing
• Artificial Intelligence (AI)
• Robotics

Short-Term Courses

The IIS will also offer short-term training programs in partnership with industry leaders. For example:

• Industrial Robotics training with Fanuc India
• Industrial Automation training with SMC India
• Culinary & Housekeeping training with Taj Skyline

These short-term courses allow students to quickly learn specific skills and become job-ready in a shorter time frame.

Vision for the Future

Jayant Chaudhary, a key figure in the project, stated that the IIS plays an important role in achieving the Prime Minister’s vision of making India the ‘Skill Capital of the World’. By providing advanced training, the institute helps equip young people with the skills they need to succeed in both India and abroad.

Related Initiatives

On the same day, PM Modi also launched the Vidya Samiksha Kendra (VSK) in Maharashtra. The VSK uses technology and AI to improve educational systems across the country. There are currently 30 VSKs nationwide, all focused on making data-driven decisions to enhance the quality of education and outcomes for students.
