Sangam: The Digital Twin Initiative
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), through the Telecom Center of Excellence (TCOE), has launched the groundbreaking ‘Sangam: Digital Twin’ initiative to revolutionize infrastructure planning and management. The first outreach program was held at IIT Delhi on March 7, 2024, under the theme “Bridging the gap between Innovation and Planning.”
Inauguration and Key Highlights
The event was jointly inaugurated by Dr. Neeraj Mittal, Secretary of Telecom, and Professor Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi. During the event, the crucial role of digital twin in modernizing infrastructure, fostering innovation, and enabling informed decision-making was highlighted. Digital twins replicate physical assets digitally, collect real-time data, and model process behaviors, to improve operational efficiency and potentially saving significant costs in infrastructure projects.
Themes Explored at the Outreach Programme
- Journey from Physical World to Real-time Intelligent Virtual World
Industry leaders showcased smart infrastructure solutions, geospatial mastery, and Building Information Modeling (BIM)- Breathing Life into Digital Twins: Dynamic Data Integration
The conference discussed infusing data streams from road traffic insights by Nayan, and telecom insights from Airtel India & Reliance Jio, to harness diverse datasets for the Sangam initiative.- Innovative Frontiers: Shaping the Future with Digital Twins and Advanced Technologies
Microsoft showcased their revolutionary data sharing solution using Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs). Meta and WhatsApp provided insights on advanced visualization technologies like AR/VR, safeguarding privacy while driving innovation.- Building the Future Together – Going Global
Dr. Javier, CTO of Aingura IIOT, joined remotely from Spain to share success cases in Digital Twins, aligning with the theme “Global Synergy: Unveiling Interconnected Digital Twins and International Best Practices.”Significance of the Initiative
The initiative is seen as a paradigm shift in conceptualizing and managing infrastructure, paving the way for smarter, more resilient cities. As the telecom industry embraces digital transformation, DoT’s initiatives like Sangam are poised to drive innovation and efficiency, shaping a more connected and sustainable future.
Background
The Sangam: Digital Twin initiative welcomes Expressions of Interest (EoI) from industry leaders, startups, MSMEs, academia, innovators, and forward-thinkers. Digital Twin technology offers a solution by creating virtual replicas of physical assets, enabling real-time monitoring, simulation, and analysis for iterative experimentation and feedback loops to achieve optimal outcomes.
