Operation Garuda

The Central Bureau of Investigation has launched a multi-phase ‘Operation Garuda’ against illicit drug trafficking network, registering 127 new cases, arresting 175 people and seizing huge quantities of narcotic drugs, the probe agency said in a statement on Thursday.

The agency said, during this special operation with several state police forces including from Punjab, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Maharashtra, and Narcotics Control Bureau, around 6,600 suspects/persons were checked; 127 new cases wereregistered and around 175 persons including six absconders/proclaimed offenders arrested. Searches, seizures, and arrests were carried out across multiple states/UT in India.

About 175 persons allegedly involved in drug smuggling have been arrested in different parts of the country in the operation led by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in close coordination with Interpol, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), and the police forces.

Purpose:

The multi-phase exercise code-named “Operation Garuda” has been launched to dismantle the drug smuggling networks with international linkages through coordinated enforcement actions across the world, through Interpol.

According to the CBI, the operation has so far resulted in the registration of 127 cases and arrests along with the seizure of huge quantities of narcotics. “Apart from the CBI and the NCB, the police in eight States and Union Territory, including Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Manipur participated,” said an agency official.

The enforcement agencies checked about 6,600 suspects. Among those arrested were six proclaimed offenders or absconders. The seizures comprise 5.13 kg of heroin, ; 105.997 kg of Tramadol, 33.94-kg ganja, 3.29-kg charas, over 1.30 kg of mephedrone, a large number of Buprenorphine tablets and other narcotics substances.

  • The CBI is doing this in close coordination with enforcement actions across international jurisdictions through INTERPOL and Narcotics Control Bureau with special focus on Indian Ocean Region.
  • Operation GARUDA seeks to target drug networks with international footprints for action against handlers, operatives, production zones and support elements.
  • During the Operation, searches, seizures and arrests were carried out across multiple states and UTs in the country. Apart from CBI and NCB, eight states and UT Police including Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Manipur have also participated in this Operation.
